Requirements for Slowplaying in Poker

As poker is a profound game, there can be a multitude of tactics and strategies that can be gleaned from it but sadly, this is not the case. Only a few tactics are focused upon by everyone, including poker players and the media whose portrayals of the popular card game seem to focus only on skills and strategies that only add panache to the game.

One such example of those which are sidelined is slowplaying, a tactic that only the hardcore poker players know and practices. Slowplaying is essentially the direct opposite of bluffing, a tactic which seems to be only thing about poker since every one is so engrossed about it. Whereas bluffing is done by acting as if one has a strong hand when actually one has a marginal one, slowplaying is done through acting as if one has marginal hand when in fact one has the likely winning hand.

So why would one slowplay? Again, it will be easier for one to see the purpose of slowplaying through the comparison of it against a more well-known poker tactic such as bluffing. If bluffing is done to kick out opponents of the round and win the pot when one has a weak hand, the objective of slowplaying is to enlarge the pot more by enticing one's opponents to wager more by feigning weakness so as one will have a larger pot to win since one has a relatively strong hand.

Like bluffing, one who will slowplay must first make sure that some conditions are met before one pushes through doing the tactic. Here are the important conditions to take note before one slowplays:

One has a strong hand. Slowplaying is all about feigning weakness and hiding one's strength to opponents so doing the tactic with a weak hand will not make any sense at all. One has no need to feign weakness when one is actually weak. It is also important that players must be sure that their hands, aside from being strong, are very likely to be the winning hands at the moment.

The pot must not be large at the moment one plans to slowplay. A large pot is a detriment to one's slowplay. Since slowplaying is all about faking weakness to entice opponents into wagering more, having an already large pot will result in players be weary of wagering more which will run counter into the overall strategy of slowplaying.

Slowplaying is an underrated tactic partly because of the undue exposure of tactics such as bluffing. Being a successful poker player however, requires that one has a profound understanding of the game which makes it important for one to be familiar with and understand not so well-known poker tactics such as slowplaying.
